Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/19

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will continue their series and their rivalry tonight in the Bronx with the middle game of their three-game set. In the start tonight the Yankees will send Luis Severino to the mound to face off with David Price for the Red Sox. This game has all the makings of being really fun for the Yankees and their fans, or really, really frustrating, so let’s find out which one it is as we get to it here in the Bronx.

Severino looked better in his last start despite being pulled after throwing just 83 pitches. Severino was dealing against the Minnesota Twins with two outs in the sixth inning before being pulled by manager Aaron Boone. Since July 12 the Yankees right-hander has posted a 3-6 record with a 6.43 ERA which may have been the reason for the premature exit from the game.

Price has been spectacular for the Red Sox over the last two months including a 5-0 record with a 1.56 ERA in his last nine starts since the All-Star break. Price, however, has struggled against the Yankees and especially struggled inside Yankee Stadium since joining the Red Sox to the tune of an 0-5 record and a 10.44 ERA in five starts.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/18

Rivalry renewed, just this time on a Tuesday afternoon in the Bronx. Despite the weird start time for the game the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will continue their rivalry this week as the 2018 season begins to wind down. In the opener of the three-game set this week the Yankees will send JA Happ out to the mound to face off with Nathan Eovaldi for the Red Sox. Rivalry renewed, so let’s get to it here in the Bronx.

Happ has possibly been the Yankees most reliable starters of the second half and since his acquisition in late July. Happ has made eight starts as a Yankee and has posted a 6-0 record with a 2.70 ERA with the Yankees winning seven of those eight games.

Eovaldi has a great record inside Yankee Stadium throughout his career posting a 10-5 record with a 3.85 ERA. Eovaldi also dominated the Yankees in his last start inside Fenway Park as well allowing no runs on three hits in eight innings of work back on August 4.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/4

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox are back at it again this afternoon inside Fenway Park in the third of their four-game weekend set in Boston. Could the Yankees potentially get a glimpse into their future this afternoon? Only time will tell, but for today’s start the Yankees will call up RHP Chance Adams to make his MLB debut in place of JA Happ while the Red Sox will counter with a familiar face to the Bombers in former Yankees pitcher Nathan Eovaldi. Let’s get to it here in Boston’s historic Fenway Park, home of the Green Monstah.

Adams will make his MLB debut this afternoon for the Yankees in place of JA Happ who had contracted hand, foot and mouth disease. Adams has struggled some in the minor leagues this season for the Yankees and at Triple-A in general, but will get the chance, no pun intended, to make all of that go away with a strong start this afternoon in Beantown.

Eovaldi will once again see the greatest rivalry in the history of Major League Baseball, but this time from the side of the Boston Red Sox. Eovaldi was a pitcher for the Yankees in 2015 and 2016 but was recently traded to the Red Sox from the Rays before the trade deadline.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 6/29

Good morning and welcome back to the Bronx where the rivalry is about to be renewed one more time between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox. In the first of this three-game weekend set between the top two teams in the American League East Division the Yankees will send CC Sabathia to the mound to face off with Eduardo Rodriguez for the Red Sox. Let’s get to it here in the Bronx.

Sabathia has been the loser of his last two starts, both at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, despite pitching well enough to win in both of his starts. In the two starts combined Sabathia allowed just five runs total, four of them earned, with 14 strikeouts in 13 innings of work. Sabathia will look to limit the damage against Boston tonight and hopefully will hand the bullpen a lead.

Rodriguez has been solid as of late with just one blip on the radar, a tough start against the Seattle Mariners last time out where the Red Sox lefty allowed five runs in four innings of work. Rodriguez has pitched to a 2.97 ERA in his past seven starts and will look to build on a strong outing against the Yankees last time out on May 10^th where he hurled five shutout innings with eight strikeouts.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 5/8

Good morning Yankees family and welcome back to baseball tonight as the New York Yankees face off with the Boston Red Sox. I have to think that the worst thing a red-hot team like the New York Yankees could do while they are streaking is to take a day off, but with a team this deep, young and talented the “norm” may very well be thrown out the window at this point. Looking to keep the good times rolling for the Yankees is Luis Severino who will toe the rubber against Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox. Let’s get to it here in the Bronx.

Severino heads into this start tonight with the Red Sox fresh off the first complete game shutout of his career limiting the Houston Astros to just five hits on Wednesday. Severino has made four starts since seeing the Red Sox earlier this season and is sporting a 1.24 ERA with five walks and 32 strikeouts in 29 innings of work during that span.

Pomeranz has made three starts for Boston since coming off the disabled list and will make his fourth start since the DL trip tonight in the Bronx. Pomeranz has a career 3-2 record inside Yankee Stadium with a 3.12 ERA, a trend that hopefully worsens tonight in the Bronx.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 4/12

Good morning Yankees family. Tonight the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will finish off their three-game set inside Fenway Park with a third consecutive exciting pitching matchup. We have seen Severino v Sale and we have seen Tanaka v Price, and tonight we will all hopefully be entertained by the pitching matchup of Sonny Gray v Rick Porcello. On most teams these two starters would be the respective aces on their teams, but in New York and Boston they are 3^rd and 4^th starters which goes to show you just how deep these two rosters really are. This rivalry has been renewed and it should be fun to watch for a long, long time.

Gray earned his first victory of the season last time out when he took the ball against the Baltimore Orioles. In the start Gray allowed three runs on four hits in six innings, but Gray will have to be much better than that to beat Boston tonight inside Fenway Park. During Gray’s career the Yankees right-hander has posted a 1-4 record with a 4.93 ERA in six career starts against the Red Sox including an 0-2 record and a 6.75 ERA inside Fenway Park. Wicked bad.

Porcello is off to a strong start here in 2018 and will look to keep that going tonight against the Yankees. Porcello is already 2-0 on the young season, albeit against weaker opponents than the Yankees on paper, and will look to make that 3-0 tonight in Fenway. Porcello has made 18 career starts against the Yankees and owns an 8-8 record with a 3.27 ERA against the Bronx Bombers.

Painful Experience: TV Games Thru NESN-Colored Glasses...

However, the End Result is all that matters…

Despite fielding a team with primarily high numbers (on their jerseys; not their stats), the Yankees accomplished the objective on Saturday. Beat the Red Sox. The Yankees came away from their only visit to JetBlue Park in Fort Myers, FL with a 5-3 victory. I know, it means nothing but as I said yesterday, I wanted to beat the Red Sox regardless of the significance of the game. Hanley Ramirez, who promised the Red Sox Nation that they’d “step on everybody’s neck” when the Sox signed J.D. Martinez, was 0-for-3, with a strikeout.

Since the game was televised by the MLB Network and it was at Boston’s ballpark, we were subjected to the NESN broadcast crew of Dave O’Brien, Tim Wakefield and Steve Lyons. Maybe it was just me, but I found their telecast to be one of the most myopic experiences that I’ve ever witnessed. If you believed what you heard (no worries, I did not), you would come away thinking the Red Sox are an extraordinary team, made more powerful with the presence of J.D. Martinez, while the Yankees have numerous questions and are a “one-dimensional team”. They also took shots at CC Sabathia for no reason, leaving you with the impression that CC is held together by duct tape. I didn’t mind the guests they featured regarding the Red Sox Foundation and other notable causes, but it seemed like they disregarded the game at times and it was as if the NESN broadcasters knew nothing about the Yankees players in the game. As Charles Barkley would say, “That’s turrible”. I am not impressed by NESN or the Red Sox.

Miguel Andujar continued his hot hitting. He didn’t start the game but entered later as a replacement for Brandon Drury. His eighth-inning single scored Jeff Hendrix with an insurance run after the Yankees had taken a one-run lead on the Sox. The day was an enjoyable experience for Andujar who got to meet one of his childhood heroes, former Red Sox slugger David Ortiz. Although Andujar and Ortiz are both from the Dominican Republic, I was not aware they were from the same hometown.  No wonder Andujar emulates Big Papi’s swing.

The Yankees improved to 8-1, best in the Grapefruit League.  Today, they’ll face an old friend in Nathan “Nasty Nate” Eovaldi and the Tampa Bay Rays.  Nick Solak, one of the Yankees prospects involved in the trade for Brandon Drury, will start at second base for the Rays.

Russell Wilson left camp today but gave the players signed NFL footballs before his departure. Even though I am not a Seahawks fan, I knew that Wilson was a great guy. But his time in Training Camp and his words left me with the greater perception that his character exceeds his talent, which is no small task. I remain convinced that his time at Steinbrenner Field was a worthwhile experience although he struck out in his lone at-bat. His winning attitude and desire to be great is infectious. I think the Yankees players learned a great deal from the champion QB.  

Clint Frazier was held out from workouts on Saturday but, fortunately, his MRI on Friday came back clean. He’ll meet with a doctor today. Hopefully this not more serious than it appears to be and he’ll be back on the field in the not-so-distant future. Jacoby Ellsbury remains sidelined with the right oblique strain which is fine. That’s certainly one injury you don’t want to rush given the risk of further setback if you try to come back too soon.  

Recent photos of Chase Headley and Dustin Fowler are the latest evidence the Yankees should revisit their facial hair policy.  I am not a fan of the wild Justin Turner look, but cleanly groomed beards should be acceptable.

Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com has a very nice write up this morning about my favorite Yankees pitching prospect (with no offense to Justus Sheffield or Chance Adams). Albert Abreu, recovering from recent emergency appendectomy surgery, should be able to resume his throwing program soon. It will be fun to watch this very talented right-hander continue his ascent through the Yankees farm system.  I am a huge Abreu fan and I look forward to the day he takes the mound at Yankee Stadium.

Game Preview: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox 9/1

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will be back at it again tonight for the second time in their four-game extended weekend set. Last night we watched as two left-handed starters faced off head-to-head in CC Sabathia and Eduardo Rodriguez and tonight we will watch as Sonny Gray takes the ball for the Yankees and Doug Fister takes the ball for the Red Sox. Over the past couple offseasons I have clamored for the Yankees to sign Fister, even on a non-guaranteed deal, for insurance and such so if Fister pitches well tonight I may put aside my “small sample size” philosophy and rage a little bit. I can’t help it, it’s the fan and the passion for this team in me. Let’s hope the Yankees offense and Gray can make all this a moot point because I’m sure you guys and girls don’t want to hear me rant again. Or maybe you do J

Gray pitched like the pitcher the Yankees thought they were acquiring at the July 31^st trade deadline last time out against the Seattle Mariners allowing just a solo home run and two other hits while mixing in nine strikeouts in a victory. Gray has made five starts for the Yankees and has posted a 2-3 record with a 2.70 ERA in five starts including a loss to the Boston Red Sox on August 20. Many of these losses were due to lack of run support and not because Gray didn’t pitch well enough to win.

Fister has also made five starts for the Red Sox and will make his first rivalry start for the team tonight in the Bronx. In five starts Fister has put up a 3-2 record and a 3.41 ERA for the Red Sox and will be making just his second career start inside Yankee Stadium tonight as well. In Fister’s only start in the Bronx the righty allowed three runs in seven innings of work as a member of the Washington Nationals.

Okay, so maybe I am exaggerating just a tad but if the Yankees and CC Sabathia were able to take down Chris Sale and the Red Sox tonight I may feel just a little bit closer to heaven, I can’t even lie. I love beating the Red Sox and I especially love beating tough pitchers like Sale so let’s get to it. Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/19

The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will be back at it again tonight in the second of their three-game weekend set inside historic Fenway Park. In the middle game of the series we, the fans, will be entertained with another matchup of southpaws as tonight the Yankees activate CC Sabathia off the disabled list to face off with Chris Sale for the Red Sox. I’m not sure if Sabathia is happy to be off the disabled list or not when your consolation prize is probably the best pitcher in the American League right now so the Yankees offense will have to show up and do what they can.

Sabathia will be activated off the disabled list tonight before the game after leaving a start on August 8 in Toronto with right knee pain. An MRI revealed no new structural damage to the knee leading Sabathia to get a series of injections in the knee during his rehab process. That knee and its health gets tested tonight in Boston.

Sale has been dominant against the Yankees in three starts against them this season and will look to make it a four-peat tonight inside Fenway Park. Despite pitching to a 1.19 ERA against the Yankees this season Sale does not have a win to show for, a trend that hopefully continues tonight for the Red Sox ace. Sale comes into this start sporting a career 4-2 record and 1.18 ERA against the New York Yankees as a member of the White Sox and Red Sox. Yuck.

Game Preview: New York Yankees @ Boston Red Sox 8/18

Well now that I got Jerry Remy, NESN and Red Sox nation all fired up let’s get to this game preview for the weekend. The New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox will spend their second consecutive weekend facing off head-to-head with this particular series coming inside historic Fenway Park. The Yankees lost two-of-three last weekend in the Bronx and will look to turn their fortunes around in this series as they inch closer to the top of the American League East Division. The Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound to square off with Drew Pomeranz for the Red Sox in the opener which should be an entertaining one to watch as a fan.

Montgomery will make his second consecutive start against the Boston Red Sox after dueling Chris Sale inning for inning on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball last time out. Montgomery matches sale over 5.1 innings allowing just one run on two hits in a no-decision and eventual Yankees loss.

Pomeranz faced and beat the Yankees in his last start despite giving up seven hits and three runs in 6.2 innings of work. That start marked the 10^th time in his last 11 starts that Pomeranz has given up three runs or fewer in a start.

RANT: Hey NESN … So What if Aaron Judge Strikes Out A Lot?

So the New York Yankees and New York Mets executives and front office personnel keep firing pot shots back and forth at each other which reminds me of the good ole days of the Yankees and Red Sox rivalry. With the Yankees making the trip to Boston this weekend for their second consecutive weekend series head-to-head I wanted to take this opportunity on this beautiful Friday morning to take a cheap shot of my own, not at the Boston Red Sox themselves but at NESN.com. NESN released an article, and if you don’t know who NESN is they are basically the Red Sox equivalent of the YES Network here in the Bronx, stating that Aaron Judge set an “embarrassing” Major League record on Wednesday night against the New York Mets when he struck out in a 33^rd straight game. My question is, so what? And while we are on the subject, don’t worry I have plenty of embarrassments to talk about this morning.

First of all it seems like the crew over at NESN never watched or paid much attention to the whole sabermetrics and Moneyball craze. Does NESN and their writer Joshua Schrock not understand that striking out counts just the same in the sabermetrics world as a 400 foot fly out or a ball hit on the screws right at a positional player? Sure, if you want to get more in-depth with it you can bring up sacrifice flies, moving runners over etc.  but in the grand scheme of things one thing is certain in Major League Baseball… A great player is going to make an out seven times out of ten and even the best player will make an out six times out of every ten at-bats. Baseball is failure. What in the hell does it matter if he’s striking out, grounding out, flying out, popping out or whatever? The team is going to make 27 outs on any given night regardless.

Those of us who pay attention to baseball and specifically to Yankees prospects know that Aaron Judge always battled the strikeout and always will. Some reporters, who needs views and clicks I’d assume, are talking about Judge’s strikeout problems like this is new news, or news at all. Judge was never the .300 - .400 hitter he portrayed himself to be in a small sample size in the first half and he never will be. That’s not his game. His game is giving it all in the field and hitting mammoth home runs. Judge can’t and won’t be something that he’s not and he shouldn’t be embarrassed for being the player that the Yankees drafted, developed and called up to lead the youth movement and the potential charge into the 2017 postseason.

Does NESN want to know what is embarrassing though? What is embarrassing is having Jerry Remy rip a Japanese-born player, Masahiro Tanaka, for needing a translator. What is embarrassing is having a blatant racist on your payroll that will be celebrated in a pregame ceremony this season if he hasn’t been already. I don’t know because (insert four letter word) the Red Sox. Especially when it was okay, or nothing was said by Remy anyway, when Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima (to name a few) had translators of their own. Be consistent or stfu.
