On this day in 2014 the New York Yankees honored the great Derek Jeter in a pre-game ceremony at Yankee Stadium. 2014 marked the final season of Jeter's 20-season career, all with the Yankees, and came with a plaque inside Monument Park.

Also on this day in 1974 the Yankees Graig Nettles was suspended for ten games after stuffing his bat with six super balls. The bat was shattered by a pitch and found by the Detroit Tigers catcher Bill Frehan. Nettles claims the bat was given to him as a gift by a fan in Chicago and hit a home run with the bat in this game for the only run of the game. The Yankees would beat Detroit 1-0 while playing in Shea Stadium while Yankee Stadium was being renovated.

Also on this day in 1955 the Yankees Whitey Ford becomes only the fifth major league pitcher to throw consecutive one hitters. In his last start Ford held the Washington Senators to one hit, a seventh inning bloop single by Carlos Paula. In this start Ford held the Athletics to one hit in a 2-1 Yankees victory.

Also on this day in 1952 Johnny Mize hit a pinch hit grand slam to give the Yankees a 5-1 win over the Washington Senators. With the home run Mize would have the honor of hitting a home run in all 15 big league stadiums presently in use.

And finally on this day in 1908 the Washington Senators Walter Johnson continued to dominate the Yankees with his third victory in four days over the Bronx Bombers. In those three games Johnson allowed a total of zero runs to the Bronx Bombers. Johnson started the dominance with a six hit performance on Friday blanking the Yankees. Johnson pitched the very next day allowing only four hits and no runs on Saturday. The Yankees were not allowed to play on Sundays so Johnson had to wait to hold the Yankees to two hits in the first game of a Monday Labor Day doubleheader at Yankee Stadium for the third consecutive shutout.

On this day in 1939 George Selkirk, over two successive games, hits four home runs in four at bats against the same pitcher. The Yankee outfielder hit the home runs off the A's starting pitcher Robert Joyce with two home runs yesterday and hit two more on this day when he came in as a reliever. Can't predict baseball.

On this day in 1941 before the first night game played in Washington D.C. and in Griffith Stadium the Senators Walter Johnson throws a strike through a beam of light triggering a switch that lights up the stadium. While that was a pretty awesome gesture and show the Senators would lose the game to the Yankees 6-5 for their tenth consecutive loss.

Can't Predict Baseball: Knoblauch Hit With Quarters

On this day in 1923 the Washington Senators' pitcher Walter Johnson threw his amazing 100th shutout of his career against the New York Yankees. Johnson beat the Yankees 3-0 and would finish with 110 career shutouts in his 21 season major league career.

On this day in 1976 a shoving match between the Yankees Lou Piniella and the Red Sox Carlton Fisk started  after a home plate collision. The benches would clear and a brawl would ensue where Yankee third basemen Graig Nettles and Boston's pitcher Bill Lee fought so hard that Lee suffered a separated left throwing shoulder. A fight over a home plate collision would effect, and effectively end, the pitching career for Lee. Was is worth it?

On this day in 1995 Mo Vaughn and John Valentin hit grand slams in consecutive innings to account for all eight runs in a Red Sox 8-0 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. What is interesting is the Red Sox teammates were also teammates for the Seton Hall University baseball team.

On this day in 2001 over 40 fans were ejected from the game in the Metrodome after fans were throwing coins, plastic beer bottles, and golf balls at Yankees left fielder Chuck Knoblauch. The game was delayed 12 minutes and the game was nearly forfeited after the former Twin and current Yankee player was assaulted by the fans. The Twins would win the game 4-2.

This Day In New York Yankees History 9/30

On this day in 1927 Babe Ruth would break his own record for home runs in a single season when he hit his 60th of the season off of Senators starter Tom Zachary. In a side note Hall of Famer Walter Johnson would make his final appearance of his major league career when he pinch hit in this game.

On this day in 1962 Mickey mantle belted his 30th home run of the season off of the White Sox's Ray Herbet. This would be the Mick's eight consecutive season of hitting at least 30 home runs in a season. This was amazing considering Mantle missed a month of the season with a leg injury.

On this day in 1966 Roger Maris blasted a two run home run in his final at bat as a member of the New York Yankees. Maris would be traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after the season for utility man Charley Smith.

On this day in 1973 the Yankees played, and lost, their final game played at the old Yankees Stadium before George Steinbrenner had the field renovated. The 50 year old Cathedral of Baseball would take two years to renovate while the Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium.

On this day in 2004 the Yankees won their 100th game, something they have done in three straight seasons, and their seventh consecutive American League Eastern Division championship. The Yankees join only the Braves from 1997-1999, the Orioles from 1969-1971, and the A's from 1929-1931 as the fourth team to win 100 games in three straight seasons.
