Yankees Stadium Legacy: #1 Babe Ruth

After starring mainly as a pitcher for the Red Sox from 1914-1919 Babe Ruth joined the New York Yankees in 1920. Babe Ruth exploded onto the scene with an unheard of 54 home runs in his first season and followed that up by 59 home runs in the 1921 season. Yankees Stadium opened its doors for the first time on 4/18/23 and Ruth christened the ballpark hitting the first home run in it's history in a 4-1 victory over none other than the Boston Red Sox.

That's it, the 100 game countdown has concluded and Opening Day is TOMORROW! Go Yankees as we begin our quest for World Series title #28.

Yankee Stadium Legacy: #13 Joe McCarthy

Joe McCarthy was the Yankees manager during the 1930's and definitely did a great job in doing so. McCarthy took over the helm of the Bronx Bombers in 1931 and went on to win 107 games and his first World Series title in 1932. McCarthy added four more World Series rings to his collections for the decade and another two in the 1940's before ending his New York career with 1,460 victories over 16 season.

And just like that New York fans we're an Alex Rodriguez, 13 days, away from Yankees Opening Day.

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #92 Hideki Matsui (Again)

Hideki Matsui was considered a rookie in 2003 and he led all Major League players with 163 games played. Matsui actually played in 518 consecutive games to begin his Major League career which was a MLB record. Matsui's strong and clutch bat drove in over 100 runs in each of his first three seasons putting his name on the map for the New York Yankees.

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #94 Jorge Posada (Again)

The glue of the New York Yankees pitching staff was Jorge Posada during his career in pinstripes and kept the pitching staff firing on all cylinders at all times. Posada was considered to be an excellent game caller and a great hitter for a catcher. The Puerto Rican born Posada had seven 20 home run campaigns and had a career high average of .338 in 2007.

94 days until Opening Day.

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #96 Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez joined the New York Yankees in 2004 coming off an MVP award in 2003 with the Texas Rangers. Alex would win the award again, this time in pinstripes, in both 2005 and 2007. His 2007 campaign was a memorable one as Alex hit 54 home runs, scored 143 times, and drove in 156 RBI's.

96 more days to Opening Day.

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #98 Randy Johnson

Randy Johnson was a 6'10" left handed pitcher that threw 100 MPH and once obliterated a bird on the mound just to show off his command, sarcasm, it was definitely a freaky mistake so call of PETA. Randy was a Yankee during the 2005 and 2006 seasons and won his 250th game of his career at Yankees Stadium when he beat the Oakland Athletics 6-4 on 5/15/05.

98 days until Opening Day

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #99 Alex Rodriguez

Alex Rodriguez is a five time American League home run champion and hit over 40 home runs in eight separate seasons in his career.  On 8/4/07 Alex became the youngest player in Major League history to hit his 500th home run and it happened at Yankees Stadium. Alex joined some elite company as he joined Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth as the only other two players to hit their 500th home run in Yankees uniforms.

99 more days until Opening Day.

Yankees Stadium Legacy: #100 Mariano Rivera

In Mariano Rivera's first full season as the New York Yankees closer in 1997 Mo saves 43 games for the AL East champions with a 1.88 ERA. Rivera transitioned from shutting down the 7th and the 8th innings in 1996 to shutting down the games in 1997 thus ending rallies for the other team in the 9th inning. In 2005 Mo saved 43 more games, the sixth time he had saved 40 or more games in a season, and took home his fourth American League Rolaids Relief Award.

In exactly 100 days the New York Yankees will start their quest for their 28th World Series Championship and The Greedy Pinstripes will countdown to Opening Day to keep you sane during the long, dark, and boring winter. Check back every day for a new edition of the Yankees Stadium Legacy.

This Day In New York Yankees History 11/13

On this day in 1931 the Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert would buy the International League's team out in Newark, New Jersey. The Newark Bears funneled many good players to the Yankees big league club while under Ruppert's watchful eye.

On this day in 1978 the Yankees signed free agent pitcher Luis Tiant to a two year deal worth $875,000.

On this day in 1998 the first home run ever hit in Yankees Stadium, thrown by Red Sox pitcher Howard Ehmke and hit by none other than Babe Ruth, was sold at auction for $126,500. Mark Scala was the seller after finding the historic ball in his grandmothers attic.

On this day in 2008 the Yankees landed right fielder Nick Swisher and AAA right handed pitcher Kaneoka Teixeira from the Chicago White Sox for pitching prospects Jeffrey Marquez and Johnny Nunez, as well as infielder Wilson Betemit.

On this day in 2010 at the Louisville Slugger Museum the ball that Babe Ruth hit out of the park for his 702nd home run was sold at auction for $264,500. The ball went for three times the estimated value after being passed down through three generations before being sold.

Yankees Announce 2014 Season Ticket Prices

It is no secret that the Yankees were not that good last year, the YES Network ratings showed it and attendance showed it, and this will carry over into 2014. Today we learned that somewhere around 39,000 seats in the stadium will stay the same price while another 9,000 seats will see decreases in prices. We actually only saw 2,000 seats increase in price, which if I had to guess I would say they were either luxury boxes or the nose bleeds seats, go figure.

The Yankees are also changing the names of certain sections, and probably increasing the price of the tickets, by naming them Outdoor Suite Boxes. The Yankees are also adding, which is currently under construction, the Field MVP Club Lounge and are renovating the Home Plate Team Store. The Yankees are adding more premium seating and decreasing the prices for the working man in other sections so maybe we can see more of a fan presence at this games this season.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/19

On this day in 1987 the Yankees hired Billy Martin to be their manager for the fifth and final time under George Steinbrenner. Billy would make it until June 23rd and finish his Yankees managing career with a 559-385 (.591) that saw two American League pennants and a World Series title in eight seasons.

On this day in 2004 all Yankees fans remember hearing the FOX announcing crew talking about Curt Schilling and his bloody sock. The Red Sox became the first team to ever be down three games to none in the ALCS and be three outs away from elimination to force a Game 7.

Also on this day in 2004 we saw the Alex Rodriguez slapping of the ball stunt that cost the Yankees a run and probably a rally in the Game 6 loss.

On this day in 2007 manager Joe Torre rejected the Yankees offer to come back and manage the team on a pay cut ending his Yankees career. Torre managed for 12 seasons and saw 12 postseason appearances, 10 AL East titles, six American League pennants, and four World Series championships.

On this day in 2010 the Yankees paid tribute to long time fan Freddy Schuman after he had been coming to Yankees games since 1988. Schuman was known for banging his spoon on a skillet and his catchy signs in the stands. The Yankees held a moment of silence before Game 4 of the ALCS and showcased Schuman memorabilia in Gate 4 at Yankees Stadium. "Freddy Sez" will always be remembered by the Yankees fans and by Yankees Stadium.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/10

On this day in 1923 the Yankees played their first postseason game at Yankees Stadium in it's history with the Giants winning 5-4. Giants outfielder Casey Stengel hit an inside the park home run in the top of the 9th to give the Giants the lead they would not relinquish. This was also the first game to be nationally televised in the history of the World Series.

On this day in 1941 the Yankees would win their  14th World Series championship in their storied history as they beat the Giants 4-3 in Game 6.

On this day in 1964 Mickey Mantle hit a walk off home run in Yankees Stadium beating the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1. This would be Mantle's 16th home run of the postseason passing Babe Ruth for the most home runs in the postseason at the time. Also Mantle was only the fifth player to ever have hit a game winning home run in World Series history.

On this day in 2000 the Yankees and the Mariners set an ALCS record for strike outs in a single game with 22 combined K's. The Yankees struck out 13 times and the Mariners struck out 9 times in the game.

This Day In New York Yankees History 10/1

On this day in 1932 the Yankees 18 year old short stop prospect Joe DiMaggio makes his professional debut with the San Francisco Seals organization. In his age 19 season DiMaggio would hit .340 with 169 RBI's and 28 home runs in his first season in the Gulf Coast League.

On this day in 1933 Babe Ruth would make his final appearance as a pitcher in the major leagues as he goes the distance to beat the Boston Red Sox. The Yankees won 6-5 in a meaningless game that saw Ruth on the mound to draw fans to the ball park. Ruth would finish his pitching career with a 94-46 record.

On this day in 1961 the Yankees beat the Red Sox 1-0 but that is not what is important about this day. This is the day that Roger Maris hit his 61st home run of the season passing Babe Ruth's single season home run record, asterisk or not.

On this day in 1973 the Yankees are renovating the original Yankees Stadium and decide to present Mrs. Babe Ruth and Mrs. Lou Gehrig with home plate and first base respectively.

On this day in 1995 the New York Yankees and the Colorado Rockies become the first ever Wild Card teams in major league baseball history. Don Mattingly would see his first and only taste of the post season in his career.

This Day In New York Yankees History 9/30

On this day in 1927 Babe Ruth would break his own record for home runs in a single season when he hit his 60th of the season off of Senators starter Tom Zachary. In a side note Hall of Famer Walter Johnson would make his final appearance of his major league career when he pinch hit in this game.

On this day in 1962 Mickey mantle belted his 30th home run of the season off of the White Sox's Ray Herbet. This would be the Mick's eight consecutive season of hitting at least 30 home runs in a season. This was amazing considering Mantle missed a month of the season with a leg injury.

On this day in 1966 Roger Maris blasted a two run home run in his final at bat as a member of the New York Yankees. Maris would be traded to the St. Louis Cardinals after the season for utility man Charley Smith.

On this day in 1973 the Yankees played, and lost, their final game played at the old Yankees Stadium before George Steinbrenner had the field renovated. The 50 year old Cathedral of Baseball would take two years to renovate while the Yankees played their home games at Shea Stadium.

On this day in 2004 the Yankees won their 100th game, something they have done in three straight seasons, and their seventh consecutive American League Eastern Division championship. The Yankees join only the Braves from 1997-1999, the Orioles from 1969-1971, and the A's from 1929-1931 as the fourth team to win 100 games in three straight seasons.

Mariano Rivera Will Not Play This Weekend

Mariano Rivera has been pitching with a sore arm and has said that he will not play this weekend in Houston as the Yankees travel to play the Astros. Mariano will not be pitching and will not be playing center field this season, his finale in Yankees Stadium on Thursday is the last time we will see Mariano Rivera on a mound. I think it is fitting that Mariano's career ends the way it did, good bye Mo. Just as a side note if his arm is sore and he is pitching the way he has I cannot imagine how good it would be if he were 100%. Goodbye Mo!

Game Thread: Yankees @ Astros 9/28

Tonight in Game 161 we will see the end of Andy Pettitte after 18 years of pitching for both the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees. Conveniently Pettitte will make his final start in Houston against the Astros after making his last start in Yankees Stadium on Mariano Rivera day. Paul Clemens will be on the mound for the Astros to face off with the retiring Pettitte. Pettitte had a perfect game into the sixth inning in his last start and looks to build on that confidence in his final start of his career.

Here is the Yankees lineup:

Curtis Granderson CF
Eduardo Nunez 3B
Robinson Cano 2B
Alfonso Soriano LF
Lyle Overbay 1B
Zoilo Almonte RF
Ichiro Suzuki DH
Brendan Ryan SS
Chris Stewart C
