Former Yankee Update : Roger Clemens

Roger Clemens, yes the 50 year old right handed seven time Cy Young Award winning starting pitcher, has signed a deal with the independent league's Sugar Land Skeeters to be a starting pitcher again. The Skeeters are based out of Clemen's home town in Houston, TX and are managed by former MLB player Gary Gaetti. The Skeeters have not shied away from signing former major leaguers to bring in the fans as they have signed guys like Scott Kazmir, Jason Lane, and Tim Redding just this season.

Clemens has had a full workout and has been hitting 87 mph consistently on his fastball. Clemens will start this Saturday for the Skeeters.

Andy Pettitte & Alex Rodriguez Pass Latest Test

Andy Pettitte and Alex Rodriguez both had x rays done Sunday night to see how their broken ankle and broken hand, respectively, are healing and both got encouraging news. Everything looks good on both fronts and progress and healing is definitely being made. Alex Rodriguez may start swinging a bat as early as this week and Andy will continue to throw off of flat ground.

Joba Chamberlain's Future

Earlier today an article by Joel Sherman was posted at NYPost.com. In it he discusses the future of Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, as well as quotes from Brian Cashman regarding their impending free agency after the 2013 season.

Cashman was quoted as saying “I believe I know who they are.” Cash is no longer dreaming of how good they could be, but believes he knows how good (or bad) they are. Not surprisingly he wouldn't say if Joba and/or Phil would be Yankees beyond 2013, as the players have a say in that too, but it's reason to take a break from thinking about the larger contract guys (Cano, Granderson, Swisher) and start thinking a bit smaller.

You may be asking yourself, "where's the picture?" Well, this is a picture of Brian Cashman. You see, Brian Cashman is a ninja, and by the time you see a ninja you're already dead.

For now I'm going to pass on talking in-depth about Phil Hughes. But I will give you this...

In 2011 Philthy missed 80 games due to injury (73 due to inflammation and fatigue in his shoulder, and 7 due to re-aggravating a herniated disc in his back). Even in the games Phil did pitch he was far from impressive, posting an ERA of 5.79 in 74.2 innings of work. The good news is that Hughes has a 3.98 ERA in his last 7 starts, and a 4.23 ERA overall in 24 starts, so we're seeing plenty of improvement. If he can get more comfortable with another pitch or two, then he could be even better. But until we see what he can do in 2013 then it's nearly impossible to predict his future, whether it be with the Yankees or anybody else.

That's not to say it's easy to predict the future for Joba Chamberlain. Joba had Tommy John surgery on June 16th of last year, and then suffered an open dislocation of his ankle in March of this year. So predicting Joba's future as a reliever is just as hard as, if not harder than, predicting Phil's future as a starter.

Did you catch that? No? I'll repeat it...

So predicting Joba's future as a reliever is just as hard as, if not harder than, predicting Phil's future as a starter.

What?

Although there are many Yankee fans that don't want to hear it, Chamberlain's days as a starter for the New York Yankees are behind him. Blame the Joba Rules, blame Joe Girardi, blame Larry Rothchild, blame Barack Obama, it doesn't matter.

"First I'm blamed for the loss of jobs in this country, and now I'm blamed for Joba? WTF?"

Furthermore, Joba is not only going to be a reliever next year, he's going to be a middle reliever on top of that. Either Mariano Rivera is going to return to take over the closing gig, or Rafael Soriano will be around to continue untucking his Yankee uniform top after saving games (I'll write more about Soriano, and his future with or without the Yankees, later). Then there's David Robertson, who would probably get a chance to close games before Joba would, should either Rivera or Soriano be out of the picture.

At this point I'll point you to two examples of why a middle reliever is not going to get a big payday...

  1. Ryan Madson
  2. Heath Bell
The first guy signed a 1 year $8 million contract with the Cincinnati Reds, after saving 32 games with a 2.57 ERA in Philadelphia the year before. The second guy signed a 3 year deal worth $27 million with the Miami Marlins, a year after saving 43 games with a 2.44 ERA in San Diego (not to mention the 89 saves between 2009 and 2010). Both teams have been burned by those deals, and for different reasons. Therefore, Joba Chamberlain is going to be lucky to get a multi-year deal at all, let alone for even half of what the Reds are paying Madson this year.

For that reason I believe Joba Chamberlain will be back in New York in 2014. Because if he's a reliever the Yankees will offer him as much, and probably more, than any other team would to be a late-inning reliever (set-up man for new closer David Robertson?). And if Joba looks great in 2013, then there's a chance the team will offer Joba the closing gig once Rivera and Soriano are no longer around (probably for different reasons), and even then the Yankees will pay as much or more for a non-proven closer than any other team.

I won't go so far as to say fans may as well buy their Joba Chamberlain jerseys now, as he'll be around for much longer than 2013. But if I had to bet, my money would be on seeing Harlan Chamberlain attending more Yankee games in 2014.

And who wouldn't want to see this man around more?

Feliciano Throws Another Scoreless Inning In Rehab

Damn Baby! You Know I Have $8 Million bucks right?
Pedro Feliciano took one step closer to becoming a Yankee, for real this time, today in his latest rehab assignment. In his third rehab appearance for the GCL Yankees Pedro struck out a batter in a scoreless inning. No word on the velocity or the pitch count but if the velocity was way down we would have heard about it by now. All signs look for Feliciano coming back to the Yankees when rosters expand this September as a 3rd left handed pitcher in the bullpen.

Yankees Send Romine, Heathcott & Adams To The AFL

The Yankees announced today that they will be sending Austin Romine, Slade Heathcott, and David Adams to the Arizona Fall League this coming offseason. This does not come as a surprise, not to me anyway, for many reasons. The main reason being that all of these guys have been injured for significant time not only this season but last season as well.

Austin Romine obviously missed almost all of this season with a back injury that has now been diagnosed as healed. He could use the extra at bats and seasoning behind the plate. Not to mention that we have a big decision, and gaping hole, at catcher this offseason with Russell Martin being a free agent. We have Francisco Cervelli in the minors available if need be but he does not project to be a starting catcher in the major leagues. Austin Romine is still considered major league ready even with this year almost lost, even with the season lost, not that he does not need seasoning.

David Adams has lost parts of a the past few seasons due to injury but has had an overall terrific and healthy season this year. David now seems to be on the fast track to the majors as a utility infielder player so I see why they would want him in the AFL. He is also learning a new position, third base, since he is blocked by Robinson Cano and Alex Rodriguez is aging. He could use the rep's at third base as well so that would not hurt.

Slade Heathcott has missed parts of the last three seasons due to various shoulder injuries. His "all out" and "balls to the wall" kind of reckless play is really appreciated until you get injured. He was so promising when drafted and maybe he has finally turned the corner with his health.

Others guys that can possibly go, because each team gets to send seven players to the Arizona Fall League, are pitchers Dan Burawa (@GreedyStripes follower on twitter :D ) if his oblique heals in time, Mark Montgomery, Preston Claiborne, Branden Pinder, Zach Nuding, Tommy Kahnle, and Matt Tracy. Interestingly enough though teams are only allowed to send one Single-A player to the AFL and I am shocked it is Heathcott and not, say, Dante Bichette Jr.

Red Sox @ Yankees 8/18/12

UPDATE:

The Grandy Man Can for the 32nd time! 2-1 Red Sox
Yankees lose 4-1
David "Mr. Confidence" Phelps
The rivalry is renewed once again this afternoon as the New York Yankees host the Boston Red Sox in the second game of a three game weekend set. On the mound for the Yankees will be David Phelps who is replacing CC Sabathia or the second consecutive time in his rotation spot. Hopefully, not that David has not pitched great all season long, this will be the last time he has to start to replace CC this season. On the mound for the Red Sox is Jon Lester. The game will be televised at 4:05 pm ET on Fox, which for some reason never bodes well for us.

Lineups

1. Jeter DH
2. Swisher 1B
3. Cano 2B
4. Jones RF
5. McGehee 3B
6. Granderson CF
7. Martin C
8. Nix SS
9. Suzuki LF

The 2012 Yankees & The Disabled List

I made the joke a few days ago that the Yankees had $100 million tied up into players currently on the DL and it got me thinking about just how much the Yankees have lost, games wise and fiscally, to the disabled list this season. Here are your results... look with caution.

All games missed is as of 8/18 and salary as of 2012

David Aardsma - 60 Day DL - Tommy John Surgery - 500 K - 119 Games Missed

Cesar Cabral - 60 Day DL - Elbow Stress Fracture - 480 K - 119 Games Missed

Pedro Feliciano - 60 Day DL- Shoulder Surgery - 4 Mill - 119 Games Missed

Brad Meyers - 60 Day DL - Shoulder Surgery - 480 K - 119 Games Missed

Andy Pettitte - 60 Day DL - Fractured Ankle - 2.5 Mill - 43 Games Missed

Michael Pineda - 60 Day DL - Labrum Tear - 528 K - 119 Games Missed

Mariano Rivera - 60 Day DL - Torn ACL - 15 Mill - 93 Games Missed

CC Sabathia - 15 Day DL - Elbow Tightness - 23 Mill - 15 Games Missed

Alex Rodriguez - 15 Day DL - Broken Hand - 29 Mill - 21 Games Missed

Brett Gardner - 60 Day DL - Elbow Surgery - 2.8 Mill - 108 Games Missed

Austin Romine - 60 Day DL - Back Injury - 482 K - 119 Games Missed

I do not know why MLB.com still shows Austin Romine on the 60 Day DL but they know better then I would I guess...

That is not mentioning all the time that guys not currently on the DL that have missed games like Nick Swisher(8), Mark Teixeira (7), Robinson Cano(2), Eric Chavez(7), Eduardo Nunez(60), Russell Martin (10), David Robertson (28), and Joba Chamberlain(113).

The Yankees currently have $78.71 million tied up in players on the disabled list. That is more payroll then TEN entire teams this season. These players, combined, has missed a staggering 994 games! If you include the guys that have missed time but not on the DL or not currently on the DL that staggering number goes up to 1229 games. That is nearing a 10 seasons worth of games in one season and will be by the time those 60 day DL guys miss the rest of the season.

All that and we are in the discussion for best record in the American League and have a very comfortable lead in the AL East. It must be all that buying of players and championships and less about the scouting and minor leagues. I did not write this for anyone to feel sorry for us but , in fact, I moreso wrote this because of all the people making excuses for teams like the Phillies and the Red Sox. If we can keep our head above water then so can you.
