Capuano, McCann Come Through Big in 5-1 Win Over Tigers

Chris Capuano gave up no earned runs in 6 2/3 innings and the Chase Headley/Brian McCann duo hit a pair of solo home runs tonight as the Yankees beat the Tigers, 5-1, in a wild one in the Bronx.

For most of this contest, surprisingly, the Yanks trailed after a Derek Jeter error in the top of the first led to a Miguel Cabrera sac fly, with that misplay keeping the score 1-0 past the halfway point.

Still, due to a solo shot from Headley in the fifth and another one from McCann in the seventh New York did eventually find a way to best Justin Verlander (7 IP, 2 ER), keeping them just one game behind the Blue Jays for the second and final wild card spot.

Yes, in the top of the eighth Stephen Drew bobbled and threw away a Victor Martinez grounder to put men on the corners, but since Adam Warren still found a way to escape that jam and the Yankees rallied for three more in the bottom of the frame (Mark Teixeira - RBI Single, McCann - RBI Fielder's Choice, Andrew Romine - Throwing Error; Teixeira left after scoring with an apparent hand injury) that negative didn't end up proving relevant, a fact Detroit's offense must be pretty disappointed about.

  1. Good game, but the one that was thrown away along with Thornton is the one we need to write about. Why throw away Thornton and talk about three wonderful replacements in the minors to keep them there? It makes no sense, cost a game with Daley and the three are still in the minors? How many games will this cost before Lindgren is called, or at least one of the other two? Lindgren is the Best!

    1. If it wasn't Daley it was someone else. I don't think this is at all related to Thornton.

  2. By the way, instead of talking about this other wonderful possibility of Mitchell and Banuelos, who the heck is pitching Friday and please leave Rogers in the pen. Rogers has been good in the pen, but Hill and Daley needs a new gig. There's your two roster spots and Green or Whitley needs to stay active by pitching in AAA and to open a third spot. Three spots for Banuelos, Mitchell and Lindgren.

What's the trade in the mix?

    1. Looking like Chase Whitley or Esmil Rogers. Pineda will take his start on Wednesday

  3. Work to make Pineda and/or Tanaka a bonus and not a do or die necessity.

    1. H. Rivas, nice idea but our starters are not the problem with the team. Being Young, they will have a bad inning once in a while and, I wish we could get more innings out of them. Beating two Cy Young winners in a row is something to talk about, let there be three!
Your salient point of making Pineda and/or Tanaka a bonus and not a do or die necessity is already here, we need hitters, big time hitters.
Of course having both of the big guns back, wouldn't hurt at all!
Nice to have your input on this site, and welcome!
