This Day In New York Yankees History 9/27: 4 Million Fans

The New York Yankees continued to sell tickets and smash records in the 2000’s and on this day in 2006 the stadium in the Bronx saw its 4,000,000th fan enter the ballpark. This marked the second consecutive season that New York surpassed 4,000,000 fans in one season. The Yankees and the 1991-1993 Toronto Blue Jays are the only teams in major league history with 4,000,000 plus fans in more than one season.


Also on this day in 1998 the Yankees won their seventh straight game to end the 1998 season 114-48. The Yankees .704 winning percentage marked the first time a team finished a season with over a .700 winning percentage since the 1954 Indians who went 111-43.



Finally on this day in 1938 we finish on a somber note as Lou Gehrig would hit his 493rd and final home run of his career. Gehrig’s home run came off Dutch Leonard of the Washington Senators. It is also worth mentioning that one this day 15 years earlier Gehrig hit his first home run of his major league career off the Red Sox Bill Piercy.

Yankees Have Lost $166 Million in Ticket Revenue

The New York Yankees built a new stadium across the street from their old, historic stadium before the 2009 season to a bag of mixed reviews. Some fans didn’t want to see the old stadium and all its history torn down in lieu of a new stadium while others welcomed the change. The Yankees presumably welcomed the change because of the added revenue a new stadium tends to bring a team and organization, well that was the plan anyway. That has not gone according to plan for the Bronx Bombers according to a report that ran in the New York Times this week.

According to the report the New York Yankees have lost a whopping $166 million in ticket and suite revenues since opening their new stadium back in 2009. These numbers have to be reported on since the tax payers of New York are helping to pay for the stadium. Here is the official press release:

"The financial figures, from the public filings the Yankees are required to make on their stadium bonds, represent a 42 percent loss in ticket and suite revenues over the last seven seasons. And despite the team's compelling play this season, attendance through the first quarter of their home schedule is down from the same point last year."

The drop-off in ticket and suite revenues also comes at a time when the team's expenses are still among the highest in baseball."

The average attendance at Yankee Stadium per game is 35,642 which is nearly 12,000 fans a night less from Yankee Stadium III’s highest numbers. Despite this the Yankees are still the most valuable franchise in all of Major League Baseball according to Forbes and the team also has the second highest payroll in all of MLB behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Ratings have been down across the board for a long time now. You can’t keep doing the same thing and expecting different results as that will never work. It’s time to bring the fans back to the stadium and it’s time to bring them an attraction again.

Minor League Baseball Attendance Records for 2016

Minor League Baseball Attendance Tops 41.3 Million in 2016 

54 teams post average attendance increases over 2015  

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A total of 41,377,202 fans passed through the gates at Minor League Baseball games in 2016, marking the 12th consecutive year the organization drew over 41 million fans.   The 2016 season saw eight teams set single-season franchise attendance records and seven set franchise records for largest single-game attendance. The 176 Minor League Baseball clubs across 15 leagues combined to record the ninthlargest attendance total in Minor League Baseball history.

“In cities large and small, our teams continue to offer their communities the very best in affordable, family-friendly entertainment in a clean and safe environment,” said Minor League Baseball President & CEO Pat O’Conner. “Minor League Baseball continues to offer what I believe is the best entertainment value in sports, and we are very appreciative of the tremendous fan support received again this year.”

The Triple-A Indianapolis Indians led all teams in total attendance, as 636,888 fans visited Victory Field this season. The Triple-A Charlotte Knights recorded the largest average attendance at 8,974, edging Indianapolis by four fans per game.

The Columbia Fireflies drew over 260,000 fans in the inaugural season at Spirit Communications Park, the only new ballpark to open in Minor League Baseball in 2016. Since 2000, Minor League Baseball clubs have opened 62 new ballparks, with new, or significantly renovated, stadiums scheduled to open in Hartford, Kinston, Lakeland and Tampa for the 2017 season.

The attendance leaders in each classification of Minor League Baseball and their overall numbers were: Triple-A — Indianapolis Indians (636,888), Double-A — Frisco RoughRiders (463,564), Class A — Dayton Dragons (548,574), Short Season-A and Rookie — Vancouver Canadians (222,363).  

Prediction on the Attendance inside Yankee Stadium in 2016

This is a picture of the average attended game at Yankee Stadium. This is not a picture of the Jorge Posada or Bernie Williams Day’s or anything like that and it’s not a picture of Yankee Stadium in the postseason against the Houston Astros. This is what the stadium looks like the other 75 or so games a year when it was convenient to print your own tickets at home and show up to a game at a reasonable price during a weekday or on the weekend.

Here is what I predict the stadium will look like after the fans were “protected” by the organization when print-at-home tickets were banned. The average fan can’t sit with the elite and the fan who decides on a Tuesday morning that he got off work unexpectedly and wants to head to the Yankees game can’t because he doesn’t have a ticket in hand or is one of the 19 people left in the world without a smartphone.

For whatever reason though Michael Kay will still announce that 40,000 or so fans showed up to that particular game. Funny how that continues to happen. Attendance will be down, way down, and Hal Steinbrenner will have his excuse not to spend… again.

On this day in 1923 Lou Gehrig hit his first major league home run of his career for the New York Yankees.

Also on this day in 1938 Yankees first basemen Lou Gehrig will hit his 493rd and final home run of his storied major league career off the Senators pitcher Dutch Leonard.

On this day in 1998 the Yankees won their seventh consecutive game to bring their winning percentage above the .700 mark. The Yankees are the first team to play .700 or more baseball for an entire season since the 1954 Indians. The Yankees would finish with a 114-48 record in 1998.

On this day in 2006 the Yankees draw over 4,000,000 fans for the second straight season in only 77 home games.  The Yankees join the 1991-1993 Toronto Blue Jays as the only other team to draw over 4,000,000 fans in consecutive seasons.
