Derek Jeter Will Not Be Activated Today

Derek Jeter is eligible to come off the 15 day disabled list today to play the Boston Red Sox but that will not happen according to Yankees manager Joe Girardi. Jeter is taking batting practice and fielding ground balls down at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa but has not resumed any kind of running yet. The Yankees were hoping to have him back on Tuesday when the Yankees have a double header with the Toronto Blue Jays but that seems unlikely as well. The question has been raised whether the Yankees should just hold Jeter out until rosters expand in September so we do not lose Eduardo Nunez or Jayson Nix and we make 1000% sure that Jeter is healthy this time around. The problem is in two weeks it may be too late for the Yankees.

Rome Braves Sprint Past Charleston Riverdogs

Braves Sprint Past Charleston
RiverDogs’ five game win streak comes to an end

ROME, GA – Atlanta Braves lefty Paul Maholm made a rehab start Saturday night for Rome, and the Braves stole seven bases to run past the Charleston RiverDogs 6-2 at State Mutual Stadium in Rome, GA and even the series at one game apiece. The loss snapped Charleston’s five game win streak.

With the loss, the RiverDogs fall to 28-27 in the second half and 67-56 overall. Rome advances to 27-28 in the second half and 63-61 overall with the victory.

In his first game since July 20, Maholm threw 5.2 innings, allowed four hits, one run, walked nobody, and fanned six. He earned the win to go to 1-0. It was his first appearance in the Minor Leagues since 2005 with Triple-A Indianapolis.

Rome struck first scoring a run on a Kyle Wren double, a stolen base, and an RBI ground out by Jose Peraza in the bottom of the first.

Charleston tied it in the top of the second thanks to a ball misplayed by Rome right fielder Felix Marte that landed for a double by Ericson Leonora, and a two out RBI single by Jackson Valera. Leonora finished 2-4 with two doubles and scored both runs for the RiverDogs.

In the bottom of the second inning, Rome got runners at second and third base with nobody out, but ending up stranding the bases loaded without scoring a run to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Jose Peraza led off the bottom of the third for the Braves with a single then stole second and third and scored on a line drive single by Edison Sanchez to make it 2-1 Rome.

After wasting a leadoff triple in the fourth inning, Rome got back at it in the fifth scoring twice to push their lead to 4-1.

Charleston’s bats went quiet and did not collect a hit from the fifth through eighth innings. Trailing 6-1 entering the ninth, back-to-back doubles by Ericson Leonora and Reymond Nunez plated a run to make it 6-2 Braves. That was as close as the RiverDogs would get with Nunez left stranded at third when the game ended.
Nunez continued his hot hitting with a 2-4 performance, a double, and RBI.

Eric Wooten started for Charleston and the lefty gave up four runs on eight hits, walked one, hit two batters, and struckout four in five innings of work. He got the loss to fall to 1-2. Adam Smith gave up a run on a hit in one inning of relief, and then Tyler Webb allowed one run to score on three hits and a walk in his two frames thrown.
Zach Jadofsky took over for Maholm and tossed 1.1 scoreless, hitless innings of relief with a couple strikeouts. Jeremy Fitzgerald got the final six outs for Rome fanning three, gave up two hits and one run.

Game three of this four game series is Sunday night at State Mutual Stadium in Rome. Charleston will send out RHP Derek Varnadore (1-5, 3.30 ERA) for a spot start, and the Braves will counter with RHP Frank Lafreniere (5-12, 5.70 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 5pm on Sunday. Fans can listen to the game live locally on ESPN Radio 910AM or online at www.riverdogs.com.

It's A-Rod Shame Weekend in America

Being posted as a part of Syndicated Sunday by It Is High... The John Sterling blog.

Between today's "Shame of the Week" on Fox, CBS's attack on "60 Minutes,"(et tu, Morley?) and ESPN's "Chilling with Schilling" morality extravaganza Sunday night - well, let's face it, folks-  the American media popes have waited a long time for this moment.

The plan is for the Yankees to be humiliated, booed out of Boston, eliminated from all races, and ridiculed, rebuked, condemned, on the national stage. It should be the most enjoyable Yankee-hating excursion since the afternoon when Reggie and Billy squared off in the dugout, prompting concerns over the downfall of civilization,.

Now, the unnamed sources of Bud the Lips are claiming that A-Rat snitched - a deed beyond dirty, because he was not only lying to MLB but also dishing dirt on the brotherhood. Frankly, a lifetime ban won't be enough. This calls for concrete booties.

I hereby propose that A-Rod also be banned from post-retirement appearances in shopping malls, Ramada Inns, thruway rest stops and on Dancing with the Stars. (Though I personally would allow him on Hillbilly Hand-Fishing.)

But....

Hmm, I hesitate to mention the gorilla sitting across from me. His name is not Magilla. It is "Hope." Yes, a glimmer of hope - yes, hope! - in this hopeless season. Last night, our blowout early lead harkened back to the days of Lou and Catfish, when Billy and Reggie appalled the Oh-Dears of American justice. Everyone hated the Yankees then.  We were pure evil, pure greed, pure defiance.

That year, Boston held a 7 and a half game lead with 41 games to play.

Today, we are down by 7 and one games. There are 41 games to play.

Apocalypses don't happen twice in a lifetime, do they?

We'll know soon enough. It's Shame Weekend. Wear Kevlar.

Big Innings Lead Fisher Cats Past Thunder By Ten

Big Innings Lead Fisher Cats Past Thunder By Ten
(Manchester, NH) - New Hampshire jumped on Nik Turley for six first-inning runs and never let the foot off the gas pedal as the Fisher Cats toppled the Trenton Thunder, 14-4, in the second of a three-game series Saturday night at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.
The Cats backed up their six-run first by scoring four times in the fourth and sixth innings. Trenton catcher Jose Gil was forced to pitch for a second-consecutive night, this time tossing a scoreless eighth inning after taking the loss in the 15th inning on Friday.
The Thunder (65-60) dropped their third-straight as third-place New Hampshire (61-63) moved within 3.5 games of Trenton for the Eastern Division Wild Card spot with 17 games remaining in the regular season. The two teams play for the final time this season on Sunday.
Turley (9-7) gave up three runs before recording an out in the first on a hit-batsmen, single, RBI double and a wild pitch. Later in the inning John Tolisano slugged a three-run double off the left field fence with two outs to make the score 6-0 New Hampshire.
The Trenton starter was pulled after three walks began the bottom of the fourth, and reliever Pat Venditte allowed a bases-clearing double to Adam Loewen that made the score 9-2. Turley was charged with nine runs (six earned) in three innings of work.
Zach Nuding and Tommy Kahnle combined to allow four more runs in the sixth, two charged against each hurler. Andy Burns two-run single highlighted the two-out rally.
Reegie Corona (RBI double) and Ramon Flores (RBI groundout) each drove in runs for Trenton, while the other two tallies came home on Burns fielding error at third base.
Marcus Stroman (7-4) worked 5.2 innings and allowed six hits and four runs (two earned) to get the victory for the Fisher Cats. Jose Pirela and Corona each had three hits for the Thunder.
The finale of the series is slated for a 1:35 pm first pitch on Sunday afternoon in one of the most important games of the season for Trenton. Thunder scheduled starter Jeremy Bleich had to leave the team Saturday for personal reasons, and so Trenton has not announced a starting pitcher. Righty Austin Bibens-Dirkx (3-3, 2.36) will start for New Hampshire. Radio coverage on 91.3 FM (WTSR) and also streaming online begins at 1:20 pm.

Jayson Nix May Be Playing On Borrowed Time

Let's assume, and at this point in the season that is what we have to do, that Derek Jeter comes off the disabled list next week healthy and sticks with the Yankees for the rest of the season what roster move do we make to accommodate the captain on the roster?

We no longer are carrying an extra pitcher after we sent down Preston Claiborne although we are carrying both David Huff and Adam Warren for the double header against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday which one will probably go down after the game. Looking at the roster filled with outfielders and now more than enough infielders who gets the ax when Derek Jeter comes back? Is it Eduardo Nunez? No, it has to be Jayson Nix.

When it comes down to Nix vs. Nunez you have to think that the Yankees would like Nix more because of his ability to play all over the infield and play those positions well. While Nunez has played at short stop and this base I am sure Nunez could slide over to second base and fill in adequately. The Yankees also seem to like Eduardo Nunez more now and for the future and seem willing to hand over the reigns to the short stop position once Derek Jeter hangs up his cleats.

Both Nix and Nunez have earned spots on the big league club in their own unique way and this is one of the tougher roster calls this season. One of these two men are going to be designated for assignment and neither of them are going to clear waivers either being in arbitration and under team control or pre-arbitration. Conceivably if Jeter is ready Tuesday, which seems unlikely according to manager Joe Girardi, he could be the 26th man to be used for the double header before the Yankees have to make the decision. Either way I think eventually Nunez or Nix is going to be off the team in some way, shape, or form this time next month and that is a damn shame.

This Day In New York Yankees History 8/18

On this day in 1989 Bucky "F'in" Dent replaced Dallas Green as the new manager for the New York Yankees. This would be the 17th time the Yankees changed managers in George Steinbrenner's 17 year tenure as the owner.

On this day in 2006 the Yankees and the Red Sox played the longest nine inning game to date in Major League history. The Yankees beat the Red Sox in Fenway Park in a slugfest 14-11 victory. Combined the teams got 34 hits in their four hours and forty give minute game. One team scored in nine of the 18 half innings played.

RailRiders lose heartbreaker to rival Iron Pigs

MOOSIC — It's the story of the RailRiders' season.

The hitting was good, but untimely. The starting pitching was strong, but the relief pitching not so much. And finally, be one hit away from a win ... but end up losing.

All of those things were true Saturday, as the RailRiders lost to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, 4-3, in 11 innings.

With barely two weeks left in the season, the RailRiders now sit 7.5 games back in the wild card race. But forget about that, as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre is six games below .500. How about we just focus on hitting .500?

Despite the loss, the RailRiders did have their highs in the game. Melky Mesa was the undisputed player of the game for the RailRiders, reaching base twice and driving in two runs, in addition to making a run-saving, diving catch in centerfield.

Batting .357 with three home runs in the past 10 games, it appears Mesa has hit his stride.

David Herndon turned some heads in relief, throwing 15 strikes and just one ball in his inning pitched.

And it was pretty cool to see former Baltimore Orioles outfielder Corey Patterson throwing 55 MPH knuckleballs for the RailRiders. Patterson, however, did give up the game-winning home run.

Kuroda struggles as Yankees drop middle game to Red Sox, 6-1

Hiroki Kuroda, who has pitched very well lately, gave up 5 runs (3 earned) over 5.2 innings of work today as the Yankees dropped this weekend's middle game to the Red Sox without any sort of fight, 6-1. I guess every good pitcher struggles every once in a while, but it sucks that Kuroda's bad game had to come against, of all teams, the Red Sox.

The Yankees only run in this one came on an RBI Groundout by Ichiro Suzuki in the top of the fifth inning. Besides that, Alfonso Soriano went 2-for-4 with two singles, Lyle Overbay went 3-for-4 with two singles, a double, and a run, and Vernon Wells went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit single. Again, this one sucked, but it won't ruin the season. Hopefully the Bombers will play better tomorrow.

A Rod Accuses Yankees Of Hiding Labrum Tear

In the latest episode of the Bronx is Burning II Alex Rodriguez and a member of his legal team, Joseph Tacopina, are accusing the New York Yankees of hiding MRI results last September/October. I refuse to call this the Alex Rodriguez show, because that is exactly what it is, because he would just enjoy that too much.

Alex is accusing the Yankees of deliberately trying to injure their third basemen further to where he could not come back at all for the rest of his career. Tacopina says the Yankees had the MRI results on A Rod's hip showing a torn labrum and hid them from everyone and continued to throw him out there against the Detroit Tigers and Baltimore Orioles last season in the post season.

Tacopina has also attacked Randy Levine saying that Levine told Yankees team doctor Dr. Brian Kelly to make sure that A Rod never went to the field again. Dr. Kelly is the doctor who examined A Rod after the season and found the tear in the hip labrum that cost him most of his 2013 season. Levine obviously denies all these accusations and says the team is willing to release all the records that they have if anyone requests them. Levine says the Yankees have nothing to hide but Tacopina says he has copies of some "damning" emails between Levine and Rodriguez so here we go.

Someone is lying and I look forward to reading about this for the remainder of the seasons and all off season long. Please sense the sarcasm there! This has got to be the worst part of being a blogger, which I love don't get me wrong, when you have to report and keep up with all this senseless childish drama and accusations. I hate it and I hate that all this has happened between the Yankees and Alex Rodriguez this season. At this point it is hard to side with or believe A Rod so I guess we will just have to wait and see how this one turns out.

What can I say about Hiroki Kuroda that has not already been said and beat into the ground? The guy has been a legit Cy Young Award candidate and the savior to the Yankees season to this point.

Here is the Yankees lineup

Ichiro Suzuki RF
Robinson Cano 2B
Alfonso Soriano LF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
