Complete Look at the Yankees 2014 Draft Haul

In case you missed it here is the complete draft haul from the 2014 MLB First Year Player's Draft by the New York Yankees. Remember New York had a plan, and they executed that plan, to spend heavily on the international spending market in what was expected to be an extremely deep pool which led the team to draft more polished, older and advanced college players in the draft.

All in all New York drafted 39 players in the 2014 draft including 24 pitchers, nine infielders, four outfielders and two catchers. New York went college heavy as we said drafting 32 players out of college with just seven players coming out of High School including Austin DeCarr. One of those players drafted was the son of the great Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, Marian Rivera Jr., after the team signed Josh Pettitte, son of Andy Pettitte, in the 2013 MLB Draft.

The Yankees top pick, Jacob Lindgren, is already in the major leagues while the likes of Jonathan Holder, Jordan Foley, Jordan Montgomery, Mark Payton and DeCarr are making great strides in the Yankees system.

Looking Back at the Yankees 2014 Draft

With the 2015 MLB First Year Player’s Draft just one day away I thought now would be a good time to take a look back at the haul the Yankees got in the 2014 version of the draft. It’s a complete crap shoot after the 10^th round, or probably earlier to be honest, but I decided to recap the Yankees Top 10 picks in last year’s draft. Remember that the Yankees forfeited multiple first round picks last season when they signed Carlos Beltran and Jacoby Ellsbury. Here’s the list:

The Yankees currently showcase Lindgren in their major league bullpen while DeCarr skyrocketed towards the top of many prospects lists before this season. While Montgomery, Foley and Holder have been quiet the team has enjoyed more than they could have expected from Payton in his short professional career. The team will absolutely need more than one calendar year to judge how well they did in the draft obviously but for what the Yankees had to work with the early results look quite impressive for New York. Let’s hope they are twice as effective in this year’s draft with three picks in the first 60 picks overall.

Meet a Prospect: Jacob Lindgren

Jacob Lindgren was finally called up this week after the team needed a fresh arm in the bullpen and made his major league debut on Memorial Day for the Yankees. Lindgren threw two scoreless innings of relief for New York on Monday after a blowout at the hands of the Texas Rangers forced the team to send down Branden Pinder and call up Lindgren. We introduced Lindgren to the masses when he was drafted in the 2014 MLB First Year Player's Draft and we will re-introduce Mr. Lindgren to the family today since he is with the club now and hopefully with the club to stay. Allow me to re-introduce myself Jacob Lindgren.

Lindgren was a starting pitcher in his Sophomore season at Mississippi State and posted a modest 4-3 record with a 4.18 ERA in 14 starts before converting to the bullpen for his Junior season. Lindgren appeared in 24 games this season and posted a 0.81 ERA with a 16.29 K/9 ratio while allowing just 23 hits, 22 of them singles, and striking out an even 100 batters.

Lindgren struggles with command and has some questionable mechanics on a smaller frame but still strikes out plenty of batters with a hard slider and a 93-94 MPH fastball. Lindgren hides the ball well but struggles with consistency and release points at times making him a project, but a fast mover nonetheless.

The Yankees do not have a shutdown left handed relief pitcher in the system currently unless they plan on using either Manny Banuelos or Jeremy Bleich out of the pen. Lindgren is going to be a site for sore eyes in the Yankees bullpen sooner rather than later.

On the 20-80 scale that scouts use Lindgren has a 60 fastball, 65 slider, 45 command, and compares to BJ Ryan. It would not surprise me one but to see Lindgren up this September with the big league club.

Another day and another undrafted free agent signing for the New York Yankees, this time Lander University shortstop Graham Ramos. Ramos is listed at 6'0" and 175 lbs as a right handed shortstop. Ramos has baseball in his blood and bleeds Yankee blue as his uncle, John Ramos, is a former member of the Bronx Bombers. His other uncle, Paul Ramos, was a minor league player for the Yankees as well.

ICYMI: Yankees Draft Signing Updates

The deadline has come and past for teams to sign their draft picks from the 2014 MLB First Year Player's Draft and the Yankees signed a ton of talent this year. The Yankees signed each of their Top 15 draft picks, although they did miss out on Mariano Rivera Jr. this time around. Either way here is a quick recap in case you missed it late last week and over the weekend.

If there is no assignment then the player did not sign. Really disappointing that the Yankees didn't go after much high upside high school talent in this draft. What's more disappointing is that while high school pitcher Austin DeCarr signed other notable players like Garrett Cave, Will Toffey, Christopher Hudgins, Will Gaddis, Cameron Warren, and Madison Stokes did not sign.

Yankees Sign Deshorn Lake To Minor League Deal

Another day and another undrafted minor league free agent signed by the New York Yankees, this time it's Deshorn Lake. Lake has the talent but has fallen off the map a bit after being drafted in 2011 by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round. The Yankees saw enough talent in the relief pitcher to take a waiver on him after only pitching in 8.1 innings for his Mount Olive team with an 0-1 record and a 4.76 ERA with two saves in six appearances.

Lake will head down to the GCL Yankees after passing his physical.

Pirela Named Player of Month, Lindgren Joins Charleston

Jose Pirela has been named the International Leagues Player of the Month for the month of June. Pirela is a member of the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and has been leading off for the team and playing left and right field almost exclusively these days after coming through the system as a second baseman. Pirela had 40 hits in the month of June and had a .336/.385/.504 triple slash with 10 extra base hits, five stolen bases, 18 RBI's and 21 runs scored. Pirela is making it tougher and tougher to continue to run Alfonso Soriano, Brian Roberts, and Kelly Johnson out there with numbers like these. 

The New York Yankees have also announced that left-handed pitcher Jacob Lindgren will join the Charleston RiverDogs. Lindgren, New York’s first selection in the 2014 First-Year Player Draft, comes to Charleston from the Gulf Coast League Yankees 1. Lindgren was the 55^th overall pick in the Draft, taken by the Yankees in the second round out of Mississippi State. In 2013, Lindgren was a sophomore starter for the Bulldogs, which were the College World Series runner-up to UCLA.

During his junior season in 2014, he moved to the bullpen and posted stellar figures with a 6-1 record, a 0.81 ERA, three saves, and 100 strikeouts compared to 25 walks. Lindgren pitched a scoreless inning of relief on June 28 in a win over the GCL Yankees 2 in his professional debut.

Yankees Sign Jonny Drozd To Minor League Deal

The New York Yankees are going crazy with all these undrafted free agents that they are signing on minor league deals, crazy in a good way, and added another piece yesterday when they signed Jonny Drozd. Drozd was a member of the Texas Tech baseball team and compiled a 7-1 record with a 2.09 ERA with five saves in 28 relief outings this summer. Drozd was a teammate of another Texas Tech unsigned baseball player the Yankees signed to a minor league deal lately, Adam Kirsch.

Jacob Lindrgen & Austin DeCarr Debuted Last Night

The New York Yankees top two picks in the 2014 MLB draft debuted last night for the GCL Yankees. Jacob Lindgren was the Yankees top overall pick and was drafted in the second round and Austin DeCarr was taken out of High School in the third round, the Yankees second pick.

Both were in action for the rookie league GCL Yankees and made their professional debuts. Lindgren threw an inning and allowed two hits while striking out two and getting a ground ball for the third out. DeCarr also went an inning and allowed one hit with a walk, a strikeout, and a ground ball that looks like a double play if the box score is correct.

Neither did much more than get their feet wet last night but you have to start somewhere, the rest is downhill from here for these two bright spots in the Yankees draft. FYI Jonathan Holder, Lindgren's former teammate, allowed six hits and four runs in 1.2 innings in the same game walking one and striking out three in his second professional game. Get 'em next time kid!

Yankees Sign Undrafted OF Adam Kirsch

The New York Yankees are filling their farm system with a ton of undrafted talent and the latest is Texas Tech's outfielder Adam Kirsch. Kirsch has become the fifth player of that Texas Tech team to be signed and/or drafted this season, a very impressive stat when you think about it. Kirsch led the Red Raiders with a .360 average in eight NCAA tournament games this season and will report to the Tampa Yankees on Monday.

Kirsch, a college senior, only played one season at Tech and put up a .307 average with 37 runs, 21 doubles, three triples, 10 home runs, and 51 RBI. Kirsch also hit 500 (4-8) in the College World Series this season and instantly becomes an intriguing bat to keep your eye on this summer.

Just a quick FYI, the last player the Yankees drafted and signed from Texas Tech was Jeff Karstens in 2003.

The New York Yankees have signed seventh round pick Mark Payton out of Texas and 12th rounder Chris Gittens out of Grayson County College. Payton signed for $45K which is $133.3K below slot, most of that money will go to Austin DeCarr. Gittens signed for $125K so because Gittens was technically above slot, all players signed after the 10th round are slotted at $100K, the Yankees will need to find an extra $25K laying around.

Payton is a small guy with no power and all speed and defense and is nothing more than an organizational prospect at this point in his career. Gittens is a big guy with great numbers but his conditioning is constantly being brought up as a concern. Both should be fun to watch this season and next.

Yankees Sign 4th Round Pick Jordan Montgomery & 6th Round Pick Jonathan Holder

The Yankees have signed their fourth round pick Jordan Montgomery and sixth round pick Jonathan Holder from this year's MLB First Year Players Draft. Montgomery received his full $424,000 slot recommended bonus for the 122nd pick overall and Holder, teammate of Jacob Lindgren, signed for $170,000. The slot recommendation for Holder was $237,600 so the Yankees saved roughly $67,600 on the deal.

Montgomery is already getting comparisons to David Phelps and Adam Warren with his low 90's fastball, cutter, curveball, and changeup. Holder also has a low 90's fastball and a big breaking curveball after closing games for the Mississippi State Rebel's baseball team.

Both players pitched in the SEC, the toughest division in college, and should be rushed through the Yankees system this year.

It's official the New York Yankees have signed second round pick, and their first pick overall, Jacob Lindgren out of Mississippi State. Lindgren was drafted 55th overall and signed for a full slot deal worth $1,018,700. Lindgren is headed to Charleston to join the Riverdogs to start his professional career.

Lindgren may make the majors by September depending on how much the Yankees want to push him and this should be a fun one to watch.

The New York Yankees have signed nine of their draft picks and three undrafted free agents and instead of searching high and far for the complete list I figured I would bring it to you right here. You're welcome.

The Yankees have signed C Colin Slaybaugh, RHP Matthew Borens, 1B Bo Thompson, RHP Joe Harvey, OF Griffin Gordon, 3B Ty McFarland, RHP Matt Wotherspoon, 2B Ryan Lindemuth, RHP Andre Del Bosque, and OF Devyn Bolasky.

The three undrafted free agents are Travis Hissong, Jake Hernandez, and Matt Marsh. They were all undrafted for a reason obviously but Hissong is the best of the bunch in my opinion and he dropped due to a hamstring injury and not because he simply wasn't good enough.

Another day and another Yankees draft pick signed, today it's fifth round pick Jordan Foley out of Central Michigan University. Hat tip to Mike Axisa of River Avenue Blues. Foley received the full slot recommendation for the 152nd pick overall at $317,500.

The Yankees drafted Foley in 2011 in the 26th round out of High School and finally got the job done this time around.

Meet A Prospect: Connor Spencer

The New York Yankees used their eight round pick on UC Irvine's first basemen Conner Spencer. Spencer is an extra base hit and hitting in general machine but lacks the power, to this point anyway, to probably stick at first base. Spencer, who is still playing to the best of my knowledge but don't quote me on it,  has a career .351 batting average with 36 doubles, 13 triples, and one home run in his college career.

Some players can make up for their lack of power with their defensive ability but that's not something Spencer can do either. Spencer is adequate defensively but he is no Mark Teixeira. Although UC Irvine's home field is a pitchers park just one home run in three seasons speaks volumes for the future of Spencer. It seems like he will be more organizational depth than a big time prospect in the Yankees system.

Unless the Yankees hitting guru Kevin Long can get a hold of him and find some mechanical flaw this may be a guy that was drafted simply to sign well below slot and save money for an Austin DeCarr.

Another day and another undrafted free agent signed by the New York Yankees, this time his name is Matt Marsh. Marsh spent his college career at Liberty College. Marsh is a right handed relief pitcher that sported a 1.53 ERA in 2014 with 34 strike outs and two walks in 29.1 innings pitched the last two seasons.

Yankees Sign Montgomery & Five Other 2014 Draftees

The New York Yankees have until July 18 to sign all their draft picks from the 2014 MLB First Year Players Draft but are wasting no time as they signed six more draft picks today. This after signing Austin DeCarr and a few others and having Jacob Lindgren head down to Tampa to take a physical before signing. 

The Yankees signed fourth round pick Jordan Montgomery to a deal and will send him to Staten Island. The exact figures have not been releases but the slot for the 122nd pick is $424,000 so hopefully it's that or less. 

10th rounder Ty McFarland, 19th pick Joe Harvey ($60K), 26th pick Clay Slaybaugh, 27th pick Griffin Gordon, and 38th pick Andre Del Bosque have all signed as well. Every slot after the 10th pick are $100,000 and the slot for McFarland is $137,600.

Meet A Prospect: Austin DeCarr

The New York Yankees technically drafted 32 college players and seven High School players out of the 39 they drafted in this year's MLB First Year Players Draft but I say technically because of third round pick Austin DeCarr. DeCarr is technically a High School graduate but went undrafted because of being fresh off an elbow surgery, bone spurs so nothing serious, and decided to go to Salisbury Prep School rather than attending a two year or four year college. So technically he was drafted out of High School but has one more year on his arm and more experience than any other High School draftee.

DeCarr is another one of those big framed pitchers the Yankees love to draft standing at 6'2" and weighing in at 220 lbs. DeCarr uses that big body to throw in the 92-94 MPH range and can touch 96 when he has to. DeCarr also has a power curveball and a changeup, albeit raw at this point. You have to expect some control and command issues, especially with secondary pitches, with "high school" pitchers though.
